Laurel Burch, when she was alive, created whimsical animal designs, but mostly of cats and horses. The socks you see above is from her tiny dog collection, which makes them a rarity. Burch’s work was always done in bold, vivid colors. The playing dog and puppy you see above is typical of her creations.
Burch passed away in 2007, after suffering from a bone disease that she’d had since her birth. She was a self-taught artist who was homeless at age 14, after leaving what the website that features her creations describes as a “tumultuous home life” in the Southern part of California. From there, she made her way to San Francisco, where she flourished.
