Saint Therese Statue

Saint Therese is one of our favorite saints. Born in France, in the late 19th-century, her arrival into the world followed a period of religious strife in her native country. Some believe she was the saint raised up to combat the heresy of Jansenism, in which people viewed God as a harsh and punitive deity.

As a Carmelite religious sister, Saint Therese had a spirituality that saw God much differently. She approached him as a merciful friend to whom she could turn to with all her needs. She even pictured herself being embraced by this loving Savior.

Saint Therese died in 1897 at only 24 years of age, following a heroic battle with tuberculosis. Before taking her last breath, she promised to spend her eternity doing good upon earth. This is why there is a pious belief that when you ask for her heavenly help, she sends you a rose, as a sign your prayer has been heard and help is on the way.
