Anke Bialas learned about medicinal herbs from her German grandmother. She has tapped into this knowledge, and has written Homemade Health: Home Remedies Your Grandmother Knew.
She explains that, for much of history, people used herbs to heal their health problems. These were incorporated into their recipes. She wonders why they were first added to food. Was it because of their taste? Or, did our ancestors know something we’ve forgotten, that these herbs can help us stay healthy?
Bialas points out that kitchen spices are also medicines. For instance, many of the spices typically added to meat dishes help us digest fat.
Homemade Health is filled with practical advice on treating dozens of common ailments, such as acne, colds, body odor, headaches and nerves with staples we have in our kitchen. This book also offers 160 or so herbal recipes, as well as information on harvesting herbs.
